Not as Distant as We Imagine: Adventures of a Young Hungarian Woman in China
– Film screening & Discussion –

Bogi, a young Hungarian student of Chinese at the University of Miskolc, decides to spend a month at a summer camp in China teaching English. She is accompanied by Hurichabilige of Inner Mongolia, China, a cultural anthropology student from the same university, who documents the journey to observe the cross-cultural encounters. Through interviews with Bogi, the campers, and local teachers, Bilige’s film explores the friction between expectation and reality. While all participants anticipate significant cultural clashes and struggles with adaptation, the camera captures a different story as Bogi’s daily life unfolds through unexpected adventures and the connective power of music.

Not As Distant As We Imagine follows Bogi as she confronts and re-evaluates her preconceived notions. Through an anthropological lens, the film highlights the tension between “imagined” and “lived” culture, illustrating how perceived differences are often born of abstraction, while similarities emerge through personal interaction. By deconstructing “otherness,” the documentary offers a contemporary insight into how first-hand experience can transform our understanding of ourselves and others, suggesting that cultural divides are often just the limits of our own prior perspective.

Participants of the discussion: Hurichabilige, Boglárka Kántor (Bogi), Irina Sedunova and Levente Szilágyi.

Organizers: Veronika Lajos and Levente Szilágyi, Department of Cultural and Visual Anthropology, University of Miskolc, Hungary.
